Fun games to play with kids along with learning

Now its been over half a year that our kids are at home. They are learning from home. But they are really missing the fun they have at school with their friends.

They are also missing the fun games they with their friends, and the games that sometimes teachers conduct with the class.

We as parents are also facing the challenge of keeping kids busy, and reducing their screen time. We also need to spend some good time with our kids.

Also why should we limit our kids to knowledge only from the school books.

In today's age its an added benefit if kids know stuff above and beyond the syllabus.

How about playing some fun games with kids which kids will enjoy and also learn a lot from them.

So here are a few fun games to play with kids. We will also keep adding new games to this list and keep you updated so that you do not get bored with the same games.

1. Hangman

Some of us must have heard about hangman. This is a simple word guessing game.

How to play:

This game simply needs a pen and a paper and two or more players.

One player will think of a word. The other player will try to guess it by suggesting letters one at a time. But the number of guesses are limited.

The word to guess is represented by a row of dashes, representing each letter of the word. In most variants, proper nouns, such as names, places, and brands, are not allowed.

If the guessing player suggests a letter which occurs in the word, the other player writes it in all its correct positions. If the suggested letter does not occur in the word, the other player draws one element of a hanged man stick figure as a tally mark.

The player guessing the word may, at any time, attempt to guess the whole word.[citation needed] If the word is correct, the game is over and the guesser wins. Otherwise, the other player may choose to penalize the guesser by adding an element to the diagram. On the other hand, if the other player makes enough incorrect guesses to allow his opponent to complete the diagram, the game is also over, this time with the guesser losing. However, the guesser can also win by guessing all the letters that appear in the word, thereby completing the word, before the diagram is completed.

A common alternative for drawing a hangman is to draw an apple tree with ten apples, erasing or crossing out the apples as the guesses are used up.

2. Adjectives and nouns

Position of adjective before noun, vocabulary

How to play:

Ask your kids to suggest adjective-noun phrase, for example, "a black cat", "an expert doctor". Add some examples yourself. As the phrases are suggested, write the adjective in a column down the left hand side of the page and the noun on the right hand side of the page.

So you will get something like this:

a black                 cat

an expert         doctor

a brilliant         student

a tidy                 room

a rainy                 day

a difficult         problem

Then ask the kids to make different combinations, for example, "a brilliant doctor", and you draw a line to join the two words.

See how many combinations the kids can make. If someone suggests an unusual or strange combination, they have to justify it. - can you justify "an expert cat", for example?

For advanced kids you can also try adverb-adjective combinations: "desperately miserable", "reasonably fair", etc.

3. Guessing

How to play:

Choose an object, animal, or person and tell the kids which of these categories it belongs to. They have to guess what it is.

Encourage "narrowing down" questions, and give generous hints if the guessing slows down or seems not to be processing towards the right answer.

The kid who guesses the answer chooses the next thing to be guessed.

Instead of defining the item to be guessed by saying whether it is an object, animal or person, give different hints: whether it is animal, vegetable or minerals; the first letter of the word ("i spy with my little eye somthing beginning with _ _ _)"; the colour; the size, whether you like it or not, etc.

The number of questions can be limited to 10 or 20.

So here are a few games which are real fun to play. Enjoy with your kids.

Also we will post about new games soon, so stay tuned and keep watching this space.
